Common Objections

Common objections about having a resume. . .

1. "But, I've never had a resume before..."
Consider this comparison based on U.S. Census data for the past 50 years:
In 1950, there were   2 people competing for every 1 "good" job with high satisfaction/benefits.
In 1960, there were   4 people competing for every 1 "good" job with high satisfaction/benefits.
In 1970, there were   9 people competing for every 1 "good" job with high satisfaction/benefits.
In 1980, there were 14 people competing for every 1 "good" job with high satisfaction/benefits.
In 1990, there were 22 people competing for every 1 "good" job with high satisfaction/benefits.
In 2000, there were 63 people competing for every 1 "good" job with high satisfaction/benefits.
In 2006, there were 135 people competing for every 1 "good" job with high satisfaction/benefits.
Based on the level of competition, you'll need one now.

2. "I have a job. I don't need a resume."
Everyone needs an updated resume! What if that once-in-a-lifetime dream job popped into your lap? You would want to react immediately. . . So, update your resume often: You never know!

3. "I already have a resume and I like it."
Everyone has a different style of writing a resume and a variety of preferences based upon a multitude of variables. Even if you have one, you should be open to suggestions from people with ways to make it better. After all, there are trends in resumes just like anything else and it is to your advantage to make sure your resume is designed with these current trends or "styles" in mind.

4. "I'd rather just fill out a job application and not use one."
Although the job application is very important, a resume along with the application can enhance your chances at being one of the finalists to be considered and interviewed for the job. But remember, the follow-up can separate you from everyone else, too!

5. "But if jobs are gained through networking, why do I need a written document?"
That's true, approximately 90% of jobs are filled through various forms of networking. That's all the more reason to maintain an impressive resume to circulate and present upon short notice. Talk to people at your church or office and find out how to network into a job that would be satisfying to you.

6. "I didn't use one last time I was looking for a job."
Many people have never used one. There was a time in the not-so-distant-past, that you could walk into a place of business you desired to work, fill out an application, arrange a convenient time for a personal interview, and start the following Monday. It isn't always that simple anymore! Many people simply go into a business and fill out an application by hand. When your application is accompanied by a professional-looking resume, it's a way to separate yourself from the competition.

7. "I don't know how to do one!"
That's okay! We wouldn't have put all this on the internet if everyone knew how to design and produce a good resume. But that's not the case. Many need help. The employment search has changed dramatically in the past decade and resumes have changed along with the times. You can do a good resume by becoming familiar with the following concepts, looking through the SAMPLES, incorporating parts from various ones you like, and applying them in your own way for your own situation.

8. "But I don't have a computer or typewriter...."
Never produce or use a handwritten resume! Never add additional information with a pen or pencil to one, either. Further, with few exceptions, typewriters don't generally produce a resume of the quality necessary to impress people! Many people have a personal computer and can do a nice one. Even if you use a computer, you should try to use either an ink jet printer, a laser printer, or something that produces professional quality results. Maybe one of your business associates, your church, or someone from your circle of friends has a computer with a nice printer. . . Maybe your church or the local library. . .  What about a friend or a relative? A former boss? An ex-wife? It is that important!!!
